Jonathan Hoefler Type Poster / 10.17.09 Typography

IMG_4686-2

This is a poster I designed last year. The objective was to create a poster that reflected the time period in which the type designer lived/lives in. I decided to use Gotham which was also the typeface they used for the Obama campaign. Hoefler text is used in the bottom two columns, these two column list the typeface and year in which the font was created by Hoefler and Frere Jones. Hoefler is from New York so I also decided to include a New York skyline and an American style colour pallette.

Faith

Faith, is typographer Paul Sych’s creative outlet. His site is full of rich typographic explorations. The way he illustrates with type reminds me of the great Herb Lubalin and that’s no small compliment.

Historic Type Poster / 10.02.09 Typography

coldwarmodern

As Tylor mentioned in an earlier post, in school we were given the objective of creating a poster in a style that was relevant to an event that was happening during a particular period. I decided that it would be appropriate to do an International Type Style poster for the period of the Cold War. This era was eventually known as Cold War Modern in the design world.

Both the States and the USSR were in a race to be the first on the moon, the most modern, and the furthest ahead in technologies. Both sides were heavily influenced by Modernism. Propaganda slogans were also popular at this time and I found it appropriate to add the “Better Dead Than Red” slogan as well as “Better Red Than Dead” in Cyrillic.

We were also given a dichotomy that was to relate to the poster. My dichotomy “Necessary Evil” echoes America’s thoughts at the time about the necessary actions it believed it must take to win a war and further their economy and image.

Hoefler & Frere-Jones recently introduced a new typeface to their already large library. Tungsten is a stylish mid-century san-serif font in four weights.

Historic Type Poster: Bauhaus

I created two posters for our Historic Type Poster assignment in school. The posters were to take elements of the design movements and show some elements of the previous movements, while portraying a dichotomy. This one portrays the Bauhaus movement with the dichotomy of ‘Disciplined Chaos’. The other poster was based on the International Typeface Corporation and the dichotomy of ‘Love War’.
